The PSIRA Act regulates the private security industry in South Africa. It requires all security service providers including businesses, employees, and in-house security departments to register with PSIRA. The Act establishes minimum training standards, codes of conduct, and enforcement mechanisms. Security companies must comply with registration requirements for both the company and its individual security officers. PSIRA grading affects eligibility for different types of security tenders.
Mandatory Registration
All security businesses and their employees must register with PSIRA before rendering any security service (Section 20).
Grading of Security Officers
Security officers are graded from A to E based on training and experience, which determines the type of work they can perform.
Code of Conduct
All registered security service providers must adhere to the PSIRA Code of Conduct (Section 27).
Training Requirements
Prescribed minimum training standards for different security officer grades.
- Register security company with PSIRA and obtain registration certificate
- Ensure all security personnel hold valid PSIRA registration
- Verify that officer grades match tender requirements
- Maintain training records for all security staff
- Renew annual PSIRA registrations before expiry
