CIDB Grade Calculator

Determine your official CIDB grading based on your financial capability and track record. Essential for South African construction tenders.

Updated for 2024/2025
Based on Practice Note 21

Estimation Only

This tool estimates your grade based on the criteria. It is not an official grading. You must apply to the CIDB for a valid grade.

Calculate Your Grade

The type of construction work you primarily perform.

Your highest annual turnover in the last 2 years.

The net asset value of your company.

The value of the largest single contract completed in the last 5 years.

Why is this important?

Your CIDB grade determines the maximum value of public sector contracts you can bid for. Tendering above your grade will result in immediate disqualification.

Common Grades:

  • Grade 1Up to R200k
  • Grade 4Up to R4 Million
  • Grade 7Up to R40 Million
  • Grade 9Unlimited

Understanding Classes

GB - General Building
CE - Civil Engineering
ME - Mechanical Engineering
EP - Electrical (Infrastructure)

Joint Ventures (JV)

For Joint Ventures, the CIDB uses a specific calculator to combine the grades of all partners.

Example: Two Grade 4 CE companies can typically tender for Grade 5 CE contracts.

The lead partner must have a satisfying grade (usually one level below the target).

How is CIDB Grading Calculated?

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) uses two primary factors to determine your grading:

  • Financial Capability: Assessed via your best annual turnover (over the last 2 years) and your valid net asset value (or available capital/sponsorship).
  • Works Capability: Assessed via the largest single contract you have successfully completed in the last 5 years within your specific class of works.

Additional factors like "Potentially Emerging" (PE) status can allow you to tender one grade higher than your processed grade, subject to certain conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tender for a grade higher than my current grading?

Generally, no. You are restricted to tenders within your grade (and lower grades). However, if you are registered as Potentially Emerging (PE), you may be eligible for tenders one grade higher in certain development programs.

How long does my CIDB registration last?

CIDB registration is valid for 3 years, but you must pay an annual update fee to remain active. You must also apply for a 3-year renewal before your registration expires.

Can I upgrade my grade immediately?

Yes, as soon as you have completed a larger contract that meets the requirements for the next grade and have the necessary financial statements to prove your capability, you can apply for an upgrade.
