The National Heritage Council (NHC) is a Schedule 3A public entity under the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), mandated to preserve, protect, promote, and coordinate South Africa’s heritage.
Focus areas: Policy development, public awareness/education, knowledge production in neglected heritage subjects, and funding for heritage as a socio-economic resource.
Current challenge: NHC relies heavily on National Treasury transfers, but fiscal constraints limit its ability to implement strategic programmes.
