Background and scope

iThemba LABS TAMS operates a 6 MV Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator where Ultra-High Vacuum)

systems are critical to the reliable operation of the accelerator beamlines. To strengthen our in-house

maintenance capability and ensure sustainable skills transfer, iThemba LABS invites suitably qualified

training providers to submit quotations for the provision of theoretical and practical training on UltraHigh Vacuum systems for two Mechanical Technicians.

The successful service provider shall provide comprehensive classroom instruction together with

extensive practical, hands-on training using their equipment that is equivalent or exact to the one

available at iThemba LABS as listed on Table: 1.

Scope of Training

The training shall consist of both comprehensive theoretical and practical modules and shall include but

not be limited to the following topics in line with Table 1 below:

• Vacuum basics theory
• Vacuum basics practical
• Ultra-High Vacuum theory
• Turbo practical and service
• Backing pumps practical and service
• Gauge theory including practical fault finding.
• Leak detection theory

The National Research Foundation (“NRF”) is a juristic person established in terms of the
