How to Register for Government Tenders in South Africa (2026 Guide)
A complete step-by-step guide to registering on the Central Supplier Database (CSD) and qualifying for government tenders.
Why Registration is Crucial
Before you can earn a single Rand from the government, you must exist in their system. The South African government uses a centralized database to manage all suppliers. If you aren't on it, you don't exist to them.
Prerequisites for Registration
- Valid CIPC Company Registration Documents
- Active Business Bank Account
- Valid Email Address and Mobile Number
- Tax Reference Number
Step 1: Company Registration (CIPC)
Your journey starts with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC). You need to register a legal entity, usually a Private Company (Pty) Ltd. This separates your personal finances from your business operations.
Step 2: Tax Compliance (SARS)
Government will not do business with non-compliant taxpayers. Once your company is registered, register for tax immediately. You don't need to be VAT registered if your turnover is under R1 million, but you do need an Income Tax reference number.
Step 3: Central Supplier Database (CSD)
The CSD is the master list of all suppliers. Registration is entirely online.
- Visit secure.csd.gov.za
- Create a user account
- Activate your account via email
- Complete the overview sections

Step 4: Get Your MAAA Number
Once you submit your information, the system generates a Supplier Number starting with MAAA. This is your golden ticket. Keep it safe and include it in every tender document you submit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Incorrect Banking Details: Ensure the account holder name matches your CIPC document exactly.
- Expired Tax Status: Tax compliance is not a once-off event. SARS checks it periodically. Ensure you stay compliant.
- Wrong Commodities: Select the commodities (goods/services) you actually provide. Don't select everything.
