How to Calculate Your BBBEE Score Accurately
Stop guessing your BBBEE level. Understand the scorecard elements and learn how to calculate your score accurately to win more tenders.
Why Accuracy Matters
A common mistake SMEs make is 'guessing' their BBBEE level. You might think you're a Level 4, but a proper calculation reveals you're actually a Level 7. In the world of government tenders, this difference is catastrophic. A Level 1 contributor gets 20 points (on the 80/20 preference system), while a Level 8 gets only 1 point. That 19-point gap is often impossible to close with price alone.
The 5 Pillars of the Scorecard
To calculate your score, you need to understand where the points come from. The Generic Scorecard consists of five elements:
- Ownership (25 points): Who owns the business? Voting rights and economic interest count here.
- Management Control (19 points): Who runs the business? Board participation and top management.
- Skills Development (20 points + 5 bonus): How much are you investing in training black employees?
- Enterprise & Supplier Development (40 points + 4 bonus): Are you buying from other compliant black-owned businesses and helping them grow?
- Socio-Economic Development (5 points): Contributions to charitable causes that benefit black beneficiaries.
The Quickest Way to Check
Manually calculating these points can be a nightmare of spreadsheets and regulation checking. We've built a free BBBEE Calculator that simplifies this process. You enter your basic figures, and it tells you exactly where you stand.
