14. Communication protocol

• It should be borne in mind that in addition to normal inclement conditions some

sites may be affected by high winds and mist at certain times of the day.

• Contractors are therefore urged to familiarize themselves with the historic

prevailing weather conditions of the specific region.

• The contractors must therefore allow for inclement weather-related delays in

theirs schedule. Any inclement weather days and consequential inclement

weather days accumulated during this contract will be granted as extension of

time as there will be no monetary compensation.

16. SENTECH house rules

• It is the responsibility of the contractor to familiarize himself with Sentech House

Rules for external contractors working on a Sentech site.

• The site must be kept clean at all times. All debris and any other foreign material

must be disposed of at a designated landfill site where required.

1. Description of works

The Contractor shall be responsible for the rehabilitation of approximately 1 km of

existing gravel road at Ugie.

The road is approximately 4 m wide and consists of sections that are steep and heavily

rocky, with exposed/protruding rocks affecting the existing road surface. The road also

requires improved stormwater management to prevent further erosion and

deterioration.

The works shall generally comprise the following:

• Construction of earth drains along the sides of the road to improve stormwater

management.

• Installation of 4 × 525 mm diameter Class 75D reinforced concrete stormwater

pipes, SANS 677 Type SC

• Mechanical removal/scrubbing of protruding rocks on approximately 200 m of

the road.

• Placement of suitable gravel material in areas where the rock cannot be

removed or where additional material is required to reinstate the road profile.

• Grading and shaping of approximately 800 m of the existing gravel road using

a dozer/grader.

• Watering and compaction of the completed road surface.
• Final trimming and shaping of the road to provide a smooth and trafficable

surface.

2. Stormwater drainage

The Contractor shall first attend to the stormwater drainage along the road before

commencing the main road rehabilitation works.

The Contractor shall construct/reinstate earth side drains along the road where

required, particularly on the steep sections, to ensure that stormwater is diverted away

from the road surface and does not cause erosion.

The drains shall be shaped to allow water to flow freely to suitable discharge points.

The Contractor shall also install 4 × 525 mm diameter Class 75D reinforced concrete

stormwater pipes, SANS 677 Type SC at locations identified on site where stormwater

needs to cross underneath the road.

Culvert installation shall include:

• Excavation for the culvert pipes.
• Preparation of the bedding.
• Supply and installation of 4 × 525 mm diameter Class 75D reinforced concrete

stormwater pipes, SANS 677 Type SC.

• Backfilling and compaction.
• Protection of the inlet and outlet against erosion where required.
• Reinstatement of the road over the storm waterpipe.

The final locations of the culverts shall be confirmed on site based on the natural flow

of stormwater.

3. ROCKY SECTION – APPROXIMATELY 200 m

Approximately 200 m of the road is heavily rocky and requires mechanical treatment

before the road can be properly graded.

The Contractor shall use an excavator to scrub, loosen, break down and remove

protruding rocks from the existing road surface and formation.

The Contractor shall:

• Remove loose and protruding rocks from the road.

• Break down rocks where practical using the excavator.

• Remove unsuitable rock/material from the road formation.

• Reuse suitable material where possible.

• Prepare the affected areas for placement of gravel material.

Where rocks are too large or cannot reasonably be removed by the excavator, the

Contractor shall advise the Employer and provide for suitable additional gravel

material to cover and reinstate these sections.

4. Gravel material

Suitable gravel material shall be placed in areas where the existing road material is

insufficient, particularly on the rocky sections where removal of rocks creates low

areas.

The material shall be spread and shaped to tie into the existing road profile.

The Contractor shall allow for the loading, transportation, placement, spreading,

watering and compaction of the required material.

5. GRADING OF EXISTING ROAD – APPROXIMATELY 800 m

Approximately 800 m of the road is generally suitable for grading.

The Contractor shall use a suitable dozer/grader to:

• Grade the existing road surface.
• Remove potholes, ruts and corrugations.
• Redistribute existing gravel material.
• Shape the road to provide a suitable camber/crossfall.
• Correct uneven sections and low areas.
• Tie the road into the repaired rocky sections.
• Ensure that the finished road drains effectively into the side drains.

The Contractor shall ensure that the road is graded to a smooth and uniform profile

suitable for normal vehicle access.

6. Compaction

After grading and placement of additional material, the complete road surface shall be

properly compacted using a suitable roller.

The Contractor shall water the road as required to achieve proper compaction.

8. General requirements

The Contractor shall:

• Inspect the road prior to commencing work.
